Whiskey & Art: Mik & Becca Major + Hudson Whiskey

November 15, 2016 at Dryhop Brewers in Chicago.

Our next ‘Whiskey and Art’ event will feature a new series by Mik and Becca Major, local photographers, in addition to Hudson Whiskey.

Photographers Mik and Becca Major are inspired by travel, light, and patterns. Before being set up on a date (2008) and getting hitched (2013), they had each been photographing for years, and love their newfound partnership creating graphic lifestyle photography. After taking a year to hop around the world, they are happy to be back home in Chicago and thrilled to show their work at their neighborhood brewery.

For this edition of ‘Whiskey & Art,’ Mik and Becca created a series called Major Departure:’

About Major Departure:
Mik and Becca aim to immerse themselves in local cultures to capture fragments of everyday life in communities around the world. This opened their eyes to the incredible diversity of our world community, and also to so many similarities that we as humanity share. It’s important to respect and cherish both our similarities as well as the diversity that makes us all unique. They come away with graphic, bright, colorful, full-of-life photographs.

All pieces will be available for sale at DryHop November 15 through mid-January 2017.

Check out more of Mik and Becca’s work here:

This is a non-ticketed event.

GPNA Monthly Meeting

November 29, 2016 at Rosedale Park in Chicago.

This will be our last formal meeting of the year! Come out to hear about neighborhood happenings and our special guest speaker, Andre LaCour! Andre is an award winning photographer known for combining art & emotion into his images. His love for photography came at the age of 12, when he got his 1st camera. His father worked long hours, but made it a point to take 2 weeks off every year for family road trips across the US, Canada and Mexico. Documenting these vacations is how Andre learned the impact and power of photography, allowing him to relive those precious memories.

Print Competition Deconstructed

November 04, 2016 at Fort Dearborn Chicago Photo Forum in Chicago.

On Friday, November 4th, at 7:30 p.m., we will repeat our popular forum called Print Competition Deconstructed. Unlike our printmakers’ discussions, which focus on the maker’s intent, we will look at prints from the standpoint of the viewer. We will all be judges and critics. The objective is to hone our skills as viewers of photographic images without the constraints of a formal competition. In doing so, we will try to go beyond traditional CACCA criteria and consider all the things that might make a photograph artistic, expressive or meaningful.
Please bring 2 or 3 prints that you believe to be especially good, even if they are a bit out of the mainstream and might not do well in a formal competition. Because images can be affected by their presentation, I would encourage you to mount the prints, but unmounted prints will be acceptable if they have a firm backing.

The images should not indicate the name of the maker on the front or back. Ideally, this will lead to a more open and candid evaluation by the group.
This forum is an exercise in looking at photographs and responding to them. We will ask each participant to offer his or her opinion on each print. The participant must express the particular reasons why he or she considers the print to constitute, or fail to constitute, an “exceptional fine art print“. In addition to composition and technical competence (such as print quality, lighting, focus, clarity, sharpness, color accuracy, etc.), we will look for more subjective criteria that might include, for example, whether the print makes effective use of color or monochrome tonality, mood, emotional content, dramatic impact, whether the subject matter is different or provocative, whether the perspective or angle of view is unique — anything, in short, that we think helps to make the photograph, or prevents it from being, an exception fine art print.
Please join us, even if you will not be submitting prints. You are still welcome to participate in the evaluative process
I hope to see you on Friday.
