Matt Damon Improv Annoyance Run

March 05, 2017 at Annoyance Theatre & Bar in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=whfI8okXovu7P1cceqvd6p

Sundays at 9:30 PM
March 6-April 9

The cast of Matt Damon Improv is comprised of all women of color “slaying improv comedy,” sometimes featuring a special guest white male(Matt Damon) or female (Lena Dunham) improv comedy veteran who can only speak when repeating things that the women of Matt Damon Improv have already said in the show – forcing the guest Matt Damon/Lena Dunham to really listen and take a baby step in a woman of color’s shoes.

The weekly variety show will also showcase guest stand-up, sketch comedy, and solo performance acts by women of color. Each weekly show promises to be “Intersectional AF” and provide a safe platform for women of color to share performances that confront the current racial tension and social issues within the world around us.

Magic becomes real when atrocity is normal, when things are upside-down. The darkness behind the blindfold is uniform and universal. We, the blinded, are supposed to be in a type of nothingness that is without limit, so there is always room. This unlimited space is a tool for the powerful, like a prison that never fills. Historical events pass into this space like coins in a jar. There is no organization, and we can only guess at the amount and value. This is the sensation of terror. The effort to organize a terrorized world reveals magic. Demons, fairies, and humanoids play in this space that is almost flattened out. When we are somehow confronted by these obscene creatures that dance in the blind spots, we are not scared. These little monsters are so familiar, we have seen them before. And we see them like a person with a full stomach, with no desire. What we see is gross and awful, and does not bother us for redemption, for understanding. It makes no sense that they are there and this is how it should be. This is magic, everything we know is in suspension. – Isaac Brosilow

Kilgubbin Brothers Irish Trad Mondays – 3/6 at Martyrs’

March 06, 2017 at Martyrs’ in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=Gsum6q4BVght2vgUYIpdtQ

8pm – $5 – 21+
Kilgubbin Brothers at Martyrs’

The Kilgubbin Brothers’ name and music celebrate the AmericanIrish shantytown that clung to a muddy island in the Chicago River in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They play the irrepressible, stubbornly upbeat music that emerged onto that island when the tunes and songs first baptized in the blessed wells of Ireland were dragged through the factory-fouled waters of the Chicago River. Playing with tenacity and unruliness, The Kilgubbin Brothers tap into the dance tunes and songs whose spirit and beauty persisted in their new home: soot-stained, early urban America. The Kilgubbin Brothers feature: Chicago Irish fiddle legend Seán Cleland (Drovers, Bohola); the mighty Jackie Moran (Drovers, Comas) on vocals, bodhrán, and banjo; Boston-born, All-Ireland fiddle Champion Brendan Bulger (Sprigs, Noel Henry Irish Showband); guitar virtuoso Jesse Langen (Hasco Duo, Ensemble Dal Niente); and powerhouse singer Ray Quinn (Tin Lynott, Martyrs’).
