The Bribes ‘Dust Tapes’ EP Release / Teenage Rage / Rahim Salaam and Ben…

May 02, 2016 at The Empty Bottle in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=k00Ny7qB0XgfZvNWdX04kt

9pm // $7 // 21+

Tonight we celebrate the release of Dust Tapes, the third and latest EP by Logan Square’s THE BRIBES. These boys play dirty, moody, imaginative blues-rock from the soul. Relying on genre-bending songwriting originality and good old-fashioned musical instrumentation, the Chicago four-piece has developed a dynamic brand of rock and roll since forming in 2011. Haunting vocals and huge electric guitars act as anchors to round out their dark, bluesy sound. These dudes are no strangers to the Empty Bottle stage, opening for ELI PAPERBOY REED this past March. They never disappoint, and we’re excited to celebrate with them tonight! Chicago’s indie-pop collective TEENAGE RAGE return to the Bottle tonight for the first time since 2013. It’s been far too long since we’ve been dazzled by their boisterous, kitchen-sink approach, and we’re ever-so-glad to have them back in the warm embrace of our stage. Opening this evening is RAHIM SALAAM AND BENTO. RAHIM SALAAM is an artist from Chicago who wears many very fashionable hats. He is an M.C. with BLUNT CREW, a member of the rock band TOOFUNCHILD, host of a weekly podcast called What About Chicago?! and is a founding member of Amateur Arts Productions. BENTO is a Chicago independent hip hop artist and DIY promoter.

Fort Frances with special guest We/Or/Me – 4/21

April 21, 2016 at City Winery Chicago in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=pTTQGdGgCZoW6nlZJlPhae

To understand Fort Frances’ “Alio” — pronounced ah-low — you have to start with a cover of a 1991 Will Smith song. Three years ago, the Chicago-based trio parted ways with their indie rock roots to record their own take on the hip hop classic “Summertime.” With a smooth bed of 808s and hand claps, the song made the rounds on lists of must-download summer songs and landed the band on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0.

But the American reception to the song paled in comparison to an unlikely spot on the map: Lithuania. While the band continued to wage the American DIY-band battle for attention at small club shows around the US, the situation was much different in the former member of the USSR. The band had become a household name, and the song’s accompanying video had racked up more than one million views. “We started to get all these messages from fans in Eastern Europe about how much they loved the song,” lead singer David McMillin says. “We really didn’t think that we were catching on somewhere halfway around the world.”

The crunchy guitar-monies layered behind the falsetto phrasing of “Take the Wheel”, the marimba-sub synth combo of “Everything is Starting to Make Sense”, the frantic pacing of “The Light Years” — this cast of songs puts the spotlight on a band that is growing increasingly comfortable with loosening its roots in the past. “Memories are not meant to be kept inside a frame, so before we drive out to the coast tonight, I will drive myself insane,” McMillin sings on lead single “Building A Wall.”

“Over the past year, I feel like we’ve taken some big steps for the band,” McMillin says. “The time overseas helped us open the door to welcome a world of new possibilities.” When it came time to choose a title the album, the choice was clear. “Alio” is Lithuanian for hello.

5:30AM Closing Ceremony

Every year, over 5000 Relay for Life events are held in 20+ countries, making Relay for Life the world’s largest and most impactful fundraiser for cancer research and patient and survivor support programs. Relay for Life at the University of Chicago is an overnight fundraising event that brings together people from UChicago, Hyde Park, and beyond to remember, celebrate, and fight back against cancer in a night of fun. Cancer doesn’t sleep, and for one night, neither will we!

A family-friendly event for the entire community, this year’s Relay features swing dance workshops, musical performances, Zoomba classes, face painting, bean bag toss, sumo wrestling, giant jenga, sports, air hockey, RAAS workshops, hip hop dance lessons, a bouncy boxing ring, and more! Highlights also include the opening ceremony, the survivors’ lap, the caregivers’ lap, and the Luminaria ceremony, which remembers loved ones lost to the disease. In 2015, over 500 community members raised $23,000 at UChicago’s Relay for Life. This money helps the American Cancer Society assist cancer patients every day through research, lodging, transportation, and support programs, and we look forward to raising even more this year! Keep an eye out for information on Cancer Week leading up to the event, our partnership to raise awareness and get excited for Relay with Be the Match.

We’ll make sure to keep you energized all night with great FOOD AND DRINKS! Also, there will be PRIZES AND RAFFLES ranging from Harper Theater tickets, to gift certificates to local restaurants, to Kilwin’s fudge, and much more. You can join us at any point for as much or as little time as you want – this is an event you don’t want to miss!
