Edward M. Gomez: Investigating Unreal Realms

March 18, 2017 at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=Ngo1J10ImQ8MWF8p0neuTd

In response to Intuit’s current exhibition Unreal Realms, art critic and author Edward Gomez will examine what is meant by an artist’s “vision.” How can or do we discern what a particular artist’s vision might be, and why has this notion played such an important role in the history of research and collecting in the art brut/outsider art field? How do the four artists (Adolf Wölfli, A. G. Rizzoli, Ken Grimes and Charles A. A. Dellschau) whose works are included alongside Henry Darger in the exhibit offer ample and vivid evidence of each one’s respective artistic vision and broader worldview? What else does each of these artist’s body of work express?

EDWARD M. GÓMEZ (www.edwardmgomez.com) is a critic, author and contributing writer/editor for Art in America, Art + Auction, ARTnews, the Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, Metropolis, Sculpture, the New York Times, the Japan Times (Japan) and other publications; New York correspondent, ART & ANTIQUES Magazine (U.S.A.), New York; senior editor, RAW VISION Magazine (U.K.), New York and London; and member of the Advisory Council/membre du Conseil Consultatif/美術館諮問機関員, Collection de l’Art Brut, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Opening Reception – Witness: The Artist’s Response

March 11, 2017 at Elephant Room Gallery – South Loop in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=H5g9HNtIjuRI8lDPiX9o5p

Please join Elephant Room Gallery for a group exhibition of artwork relating to current political, cultural and social constructs. The gallery put out an open call and encouraged artists to submit work that personally responds to the present climate as it relates to the past, present or future. With this exhibition, we want to provide a platform for artists to be heard and make a difference. That is why each artist has chosen a non-profit to pair up with and 10% of the sales of their artwork will be donated to that organization.

We are living in an unprecedented time and with everything going on in the world, artists are consistently making work that will be the visual representation of our time. “Witness: The Artist’s Response” is a collection of works created by Chicago-based artists actively making work that bears witness to their personal interpretations on what we are all experiencing. The exhibition will include a variety of mediums and subject matter as it relates to the theme. Information on each artist and their non-profit pairing will be readily available in the gallery.

The exhibition runs March 11th through April 1st with an opening reception on Saturday, March 11th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Ave. in the South Loop of Chicago. For more information on gallery hours and other scheduled events surrounding the exhibition, visit the gallery’s website: www.elephantroomgallery.com or call 312-361-0281.
