Hola Mexico: Made in Bangkok

October 22, 2016 at Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago.

Saturday, October 22, 8:30pm
Monday, October 24, 8:00pm

Glamour, aspiration, tears, and triumph characterize this joyful chronicle of a transgender woman’s long-awaited transition to her fully female body. Morgana, a noted Mexico City opera singer, boasts the dark-eyed, head-turning beauty of a Carmen, but struggles against “it,” the secret that stands in the way of her happiness. MADE IN BANGKOK proves the adage that there is no beauty without pain, as Morgana makes her way to Thailand to compete in the Miss International Queen competition in the hope of winning the fee for her surgery. Fate closes one door but opens another. In Spanish and English with English subtitles. DCP digital.

This screening is part of the Hola Mexico series. For more information, visit

The Gene Siskel Film Center partners with the Hola Mexico Film Festival in Los Angeles, the largest festival of Mexican cinema outside of Mexico, to present eight new Mexican films, seven of them Chicago premieres. “Mexican cinema has been widely unrepresented in the U.S.,” comments Samuel Douek, festival director, who founded the festival in 2008 to give this national cinema a much-deserved higher profile. The Hola Mexico Tour aims to introduce new audiences to the delights of Mexican cinema, as well as to bring fresh new films to Hispanic audiences around the nation.

Progressive Film Night- Chicago Politics: A Theatre of Power

October 03, 2016 at Heartland Cafe in Chicago.

As election season is upon us, I thought it would be good for us to get a little Chicago politics history lesson! Chicago Politics: A Theatre of Power is a collection of revealing scenes of various Chicago politicians. The film focuses mainly on mayors and mayoral candidates of the 1980s including Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, Edward “Fast Eddie” Vrdolyak, and Thomas Hynes. In true Chicago style, the looming presence of long-time, late, mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley makes an appearance. Includes some invaluable footage, especially of our beloved Harold Washington’s many speeches. Particularly revealing are scenes of racial upheaval during the time surrounding Harold Washington’s election and mayorship.
