Brett Johnson Bio—————-
With influences ranging from early house and disco to turntablism and techno, Brett Johnson successfully straddles the line between knowledgeable “thinking man’s” DJ and genuine, primal floor-filler. Brett’s sound is best known as groovy, bumping house with a hearty dose of techno elements, crafted and mixed in a way that is truly identifiable as his own. Whether DJing or creating music, his wild card is an ability to inject warmth and soul into his electronic sound. The result is an impressive discography filled with unique statements, otherworldly surprises, and undeniable club stompers.

Releasing his first record in 1999 on the now defunct, Aesoteric Records, Brett has released over 100 records and remixes for some of dance music’s best labels. The list includes Crosstown Rebels, Classic Music Company, 20/20 Vision, Get Physical, Visionquest, Magnetic, Freerange, Cynosure, F-Communications; the list goes on and on. Aside from a busy remix schedule, Brett is currently releasing his own music on the labels Visionquest, Classic Music Company, Get Physical and Cynosure Recordings.

An exhibition will take place that will timeline (through ephemera such as flyers, shirts, records, tapes, video and audio) the history of Latino / Chicano Punk that manifested itself in the Pilsen / Little
Village neighborhoods of Chicago. This scene which consisted of
musicians, artists, activists, and neighborhood youth who were
experiencing anti immigrant sentiments, gentrification, gang violence and overall negligence from institutions that run the city along with other social ills. Out of the frustration surrounding this life, art and music happened rather than violence. This is A community that informed itself, took action, and created alternatives with little resources.
Bands such as Los Crudos, Youth Against, Arma Contra Arma,
Condenada, Sin Orden, Tras de Nada, Non Fiktion Nois, No Slogan,
Eskeletos, Intifada, Niños Heroes, 30/30, Ultratumbados, Descarados,
Los Jodidos, Pkdores, I Attack, Reaccion, Rumores, La Armada, Konstrukt, Haka, Bosque, Tensions, Insurgencia, Escalofrio, Sangre de Abajo,
Sospechosos, Lechuza, Casa Blanca, Kuujaat, Bruised and Sonido
Inquieto provided the soundtrack for desperate times. Self produced records by Lengua Armada as well as the Southkore label, the
formation of collectives such as Unidad de Jovenes Latinos and Black and Brown and independent publications Hasta Cuando, Silencio, and Conexion Rockera, along with many other artists and individuals that played an important part in the documentation of what
became the scene.

WeDigBio: Birds Transcription Session

October 20, 2016 at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago.

tracking.php?code=4ZWOKd1p6RzSiKp3zfOQxh

WeDigBio, or Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections, is a global event that engages participants online and onsite in digitizing natural history collections. With your help, we can make Chicago’s natural history collections data available for anyone to use.

The Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (CAS/PNNM) is excited to partner with The Field Museum to bring WeDigBio to Chicago. Transcription sessions will be held at both locations throughout the course of the four-day-long event. At each session, citizen scientists will gather to transcribe historic specimen labels and records. CAS/PNNM sessions will also feature keynote addresses from local scientists.

In this session, help us transcribe thousands of Chicagoland bird observations recorded between 1886 and 1943 by some of our earliest citizen scientists—Reverend Francis S. Dayton, William Dreuth, and members of the Chicago Ornithological Society. Many of these observations were recorded right here in Lincoln Park, and this session will feature a guest speaker on birding in Chicago. Participants will also get to see specimens from the Academy’s ornithological collection.

Cost: Free to participate. Please register in advance.

Walk All Night: A Drum Beat Journey

Co-directors Mallory Sohmer and Kate Benzschawel and cast members TBA will be present for audience discussion at both screenings.

A musical pilgrimage to Senegal illuminates links to their Africa heritage for four Chicago youths, but it also uncovers complex and troubling issues that were not anticipated when filming of this documentary began. Social worker Elilta Tewelde, herself an Eritrean refugee, becomes fascinated by the bucket drummers whom she sees performing on the streets of Chicago’s South Side. She crowd-funds a project to take four teenage drummers on a trip to Senegal to study under master percussionist/griot Medoune Gueye (aka Papa Dame). But the cultural gulf between South Side and West Africa is not so easily crossed, and conflicts arise among Tewelde, the four boys, and their Senegalese hosts. DCP digital. (MR)
