Ned Rothenberg, Hamid Drake and Joshua Abrams at Constellation

Hamid Drake and Ned Rothenberg celebrate the release of “Full Circle,” an album recorded live in Lodz, Poland, this past July and released by the Luchaj (Listen!) Foundation.

Hamid and Ned have known each other over 35 years, working together notably with Adam Rudolph, Kaja Draksler and Joe Morris, but this was their first duo concert.

For this Constellation performance they are inviting the wonderful Chicago musical denizen Joshua Abrams to join them on bass and guimbri. All are master improvisors drawing on a wide variety of world music traditions from Morocco, elsewhere in West Africa, India, Japan and more exotic locales like New York and Chicago (wink, wink…).

Ned Rothenberg – alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, shakuhachi
Hamid Drake – drums, percussion
Joshua Abrams – bass, guimbri

Rothenberg reconciles an unapologetically cerebral approach with accessibility and emotional expression. No mean feat, indeed.” – Peter Margarsak, Chicago Reader

Square Peg Round Hole / Merit Badge / Fluffer / Rust Ring

March 21, 2017 at The Empty Bottle in Chicago.

Square Peg Round Hole
Merit Badge
Rust Ring

Elegant, articulate, and expansive, Juniper, the latest record from instrumental percussion trio SQUARE PEG ROUND HOLE manages to convey – and evoke – an entire range of human emotions despite its lack of a single sung word. A sonic mirror reflecting the listener’s subconscious emotional state back at themselves, Juniper engages with the fundamental and primeval. SQUARE PEG ROUND HOLE formed in 2011 while studying music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in Bloomington, Indiana. The band has shared bills with BUILT TO SPILL, THE ALBUM LEAF, MAE, THIS WILL DESTORY YOU, and THE JOY FORMIDABLE. They have been featured at major venues across the country including the Electric Factory, Le Poisson Rouge, Old National Centre, and the World Café Live.

MERIT BADGE is the instrumental mathrock project of members of RECREATIONAL DRUGS. Born out of the ashes of several bands that rose and fell, and the undying urge to say something with music, MERIT BADGE is a place for first words, last words, and some of the stuff you mumble brilliantly after smashing a few beers.

FLUFFER is a heavy dance-rock trio that is evolving into increasingly uncharted territory. Formed five winters ago in Bloomington, IN, they quickly made a name for themselves by combining blinding psych flavors with a propulsive and kinetic rhythm section. The summer of 2013 saw FLUFFER relocate to Cincinnati, OH and undergo a radical change to their sound. Inspired by the recent Glasgow maximalism and the intricacies of trap music, the group began using extensive electronics and deeper beat driven areas.

RUST RING is a Midwest punk trio composed of members of LIFTED BELLS, SPACE BLOOD, SNORT, DOG & WOLF, and DROUGHTS.

OUR HEAVENLY BODIES (Wunder der Schöpfung)
with live accompaniment by Coupler

Dir. Hanns Walter Kornblum, Germany, 1925, 91 min., NR, Digital

In 1925, German director Hanns Walter Kornblum set out to create a film unlike any that had come before. His aim was a film that would serve as both a summation of all the astronomical knowledge available at the time and a dreamy investigation of what wonders might await humanity at the advent of space travel. With the help of 15 special effects technicians and nine cameramen, Kornblum’s film is a technical marvel, one that revels in the beauty and mysteries of the universe, reminiscent of Carl Sagan’s COSMOS more than 50 years later. Digital Restoration by Filmmuseum München.

Coupler is less a band than a creative organization. Founded in 2012 by Lambchop veteran Ryan Norris, its core is Norris along with Rodrigo Avendaño and Rollum Haas though its membership has at points swelled to as many as eight. At its root the project is an exercise in mutual cooperation of creative individuals and is an exploration of the intersections of man and machine, live and recorded, composed and improvised, stasis and flux.

“… exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic…captivating and unhurried techno that sounded bucolic at first, then violent, then crumbling, but always with a deft momentum. You could feel it in your gut and in your skull…” – Ben Swank, Third Man Records

Winner of Best Film at the Moscow Film Festival, and Bulgaria’s official Oscar entry, this coming-of-age drama/comedy centers on a pivotal few days in the lives of four students on the eve of a famous rock band’s gig in their backwater town. Critics have found parallels to the deadpan humor of Aki Kaurismäki and Roy Andersson in this story rife with romantic pratfalls and absurdity that springs from the hopeless and sometimes hilarious depths of working class grunge. The imminent rock concert fires imaginative rebellion and thoughts of a future beyond their dead-end burg for Koko, Elena, Patso, and Gosho, but there’s a steep learning curve ahead for guys and gals alike when the band’s randy lead singer makes the scene. In Bulgarian with English subtitles. Courtesy of ProFilm. DCP digital widescreen.
