Cameron Pfiffner’s Marco Polo

May 15, 2016 at The California Clipper in Chicago.

2 Sets, $5 cover.

Pfiffner is best known as one-half of the saxophone tandem that fronts Sabertooth, the organ quartet that not long ago celebrated its 20th anniversary of late-night Saturday-into-Sunday gigs at the Green Mill. But that band doesn’t engage his ear for inventive arranging and eclectic composition. Marco Polo, on the other hand, does.
The compositions roam freely through the jazz and world-music traditions, full of purpose but also atmospheric details; the arrangements take inspiration from sources as disparate as the peerless perfectionist Thad Jones and the anarchic South African bandleader Chris McGregor.
A superb orchestrator, Pfiffner makes the most (and seemingly more) of his smallish orchestra by mixing and matching instruments to create temporary “sections” that phase in and out of existence, underscoring the music as needed.
And It doesn’t hurt that Marco Polo boasts a slew of strong soloists – including but hardly limited to pianist Tom Vaitsas, altoist Nick Mazzarella, and Julie Wood on baritone sax.

Friday Night Guided Meditation

February 05, 2016 at Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Chicago in Chicago.

What To Expect

The program on Mondays and Fridays begins with a short introduction on a Buddhist topic, followed by a guided meditation.

It generally lasts around 30 minutes.*

What Is Buddhist Meditation?

In Buddhism, meditation means “effortlessly remaining in what is”. This state may be brought about by calming and holding the mind, when compassion and wisdom are realized, or by working with our bodies’ energy channels and meditating on light forms of Buddhas.

About Us

Diamond Way Buddhist Center Chicago belongs to an international non-profit network of over 600 lay Diamond Way Buddhist centers of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, founded by Lama Ole Nydahl and under the spiritual guidance of H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Diamond Way Buddhism offers practical and effective methods to realize mind’s inherent richness for the benefit of all. With an accessible and modern style, it works with people’s confidence and desire, using every situation in life to develop fearlessness and joy. We always present a basic introduction for newcomers, and the meditations are guided in English.

*This event itself is free.
Just come as you are and enjoy.

Beautiful Autistic | By Resident Playwright Scott Woldman

February 04, 2016 at Chicago Dramatists in Chicago.

February 4-March 13, 2016
By Resident Playwright Scott Woldman
Directed by Rachel Edwards Harvith, Associate Artistic Director at Chicago Dramatists

It’s the early 90s in Chicago, and 24-year-old Jimmy has a terrible time making friends. Despite his good looks, casual banter in bars comes screeching to a halt when he begins to rattle off facts about nanotechnology or dark matter, topics about which he is deeply obsessed…due to his autism. Comedy ensues when Eric—a young man whose social graces are just as awkward—takes Jimmy on as his wingman and attempts to tutor him in the art of the pick-up, with dubious results.

Winner of the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award! As a recipient of this distinction, Woldman received support for the production. The Edgerton Foundation has supported over 250 world premiere productions across the United States, 15 of these have continued on to Broadway.

Previews: February 4-12
OPENING NIGHT: February 13

Free Multiple Attacker Defense Seminar

March 05, 2016 at Titan Gym in Chicago.

In today’s world, even an innocent trip to the supermarket can turn into a dangerous situation if one is not prepared to face the imminent threat. This FREE seminar will help you develop an effective approach to defending yourself against multiple attackers who, oftentimes, put individuals in disadvantageous positions.

While the initial defense is against the immediate threat, it is important to recognize that we won’t always be involved in a one-on-one fight. At times, one or more of the attackers may be using weapons. Learning how to defend against attackers using weapons is a crucial part of Krav Maga training and will be addressed in this seminar. Be prepared to learn and challenge yourself.

Open to members and general public.
