Welcome to the University of Chicago
. The University of Chicago
Political Union (UCPU) is a discussion RSO that holds monthly debates on salient community and/or political issues. Past debate topics have included income inequality, fraternities on campus, and (of course) Donald Trump. Debates are held at the IOP and include free food (although larger events
have been held in larger venues). Now for the main/first event:
Students of the Class of 2020 recieved a letter from Dean Ellison in late August concerning the university’s policy on free speech. The university stated its opposition to trigger warnings and safe spaces as an obstacle to freedom of expression, which elicited strongly opinionated posts on social media prior to the start of the school year. The UCPU invites everybody, regardless of their stance on the issue, to come to the IOP on October 3rd at 6pm to debate this aspect of UChicago campus life. Audience participation will be encouraged but not requiered and discussion will be lightly moderated to avoid arguments that are personal or prejudiced.
The Union invites everyone from anywhere on the ideological spectrum to participate and welcomes all members of the UChicago community to attend. The event starts with a short panel discussion featuring students holding opposing view points before opening up the floor to audience statements and questions.
