Empty Set Exhibition Opening Reception

May 20, 2016 at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago.

{ empty set } Material Experiments with Numeric Control
Steve Amos
Kate Blacklock
Kimberly Pancoast
Douglas Pancoast

Opening Reception: May 20, 6-8pm
Lillstreet Art Center
Main Gallery

Lillstreet Art Center is proud to present { empty set } Material Experiments with Numeric Control, our most recent exhibition of ceramics, drawings/paintings and installation work curated from the edges of the digital frontier. For this collection of generative artworks, the artists— Steve Amos, Kate Blacklock, Kimberly Pancoast, and Douglas Pancoast— “sketch” and define the parameters for what their pieces will be using various types of code. In computer programming, the term “empty set” describes the equivalent of a blank canvas— the primary symbols entered which will bracket all of the ensuing code. The machines that generate the work— computers, 3d printers, and cnc routers— serve as tools to render that code. This exhibition aims to showcase the constantly evolving process of digital fabrication as the newest implement in the artist’s and programmer’s toolbox, capable of creating work across mediums, and constantly evolving as artists continue to embrace and refine it.
